Through Our Eyes: LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers in Sweden
For many LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Sweden, life is marked by uncertainty and isolation. Having left their home countries to seek safety, they now find themselves caught in a long asylum process, often living in asylum camps feeling invisible. They are seen as refugees before they are seen as people, and their stories are often told by others - by the media, by migration authorities, by organizations speaking on their behalf.
This project aims to change that perspective. Through photography, LGBTQ+ asylum seekers document their own lives—their struggles, moments of hope, and daily experiences. Using their phone cameras, they respond to guided prompts that encourage them to explore their identity, reflect on their present reality, and share their hopes for the future.
This is not about creating perfect photographs but about making space for people to share their own perspectives in their own way.
